First thing we did when we got into Vegas, was go to Cheesecake Factory for lunch. We ended up going to the one that wasn't on the strip and had to drive through the ghetto and back into the nice part of town to get to it. It was the first time either of us had been to this part of town, so it was a fun little adventure.
The Monster Energy Cup is a super-cross race that Monster Energy puts on every year and is held at the Sam Boyd Stadium at the south end of town. The winner of the race gets a HUGE trophy and $1 million. They also have a bunch of other prizes they give out, a Toyota Tundra, a 50cc KTM dirt bike, and smaller cash prizes for winners of other smaller races.
Even before the race, Monster Energy throws a big pre-party called Party in the Pits. They had a bunch of demos, including: drifting, stunt bikes, biggest whip competition, and freestyle motocross. Everyone had free access to the riders "pits" so they were able to walk around and see the riders trailers and even get autographs from some. I got to get a picture with Jason Britton the stunt bike rider and Brett got a picture with Terrible Herbst, a desert racing truck.
After we got some souvenirs from the Pits, we went back into Las Vegas to check into our hotel. We got an awesome deal for a room at the Circus Circus. Several people told us that the Circus Circus was dirty/trashy, but for $40 a night on an event weekend the room was actually very nice! We got our stuff into the room and changed into our Monster Energy gear and headed out into the hotel to explore a little. We checked out the Adventure-dome and it was AWESOME! Roller-coasters, rides, arcade games, and laser tag all under one roof! We didn't ride any rides, because we were still way full from lunch and didn't want to be late to the race.
We got back to Sam Boyd just in time to get some food and find our seats before the Opening Ceremonies started. The opening ceremonies were awesome! Fireworks, flames, and the National Anthem on the electric guitar.
But nothing can compete with the race! The first two times that they dropped the gates for the riders, there was a malfunction and only one side opened. But third time is a charm. From the very first round there was a fight between two riders for first place. The first round, Ryan Villipoto and Ryan Dungee were battling back and forth. During the race, the riders are required to go out of the way to do a whoop-section at least once, or they will get penalized. On the very last lap of the first round, Villipoto did the whoop-section and Dungee passed him. So Dungee passed the finish line first, but then Villipoto reminded him that he didn't do the whoops and you could see the dissappointment on Dungee's face. He went from first to sixth place.
Second round was a competition between Villipoto and Stewart. At the very end of the round, Villipoto passed Stewart, but then hit a jump too fast and wrecked....hard. He didn't move for about 30 minutes after he hit the ground. Paramedis were out on the track to check him out and take him off the track. Needless to say, Stewart won the second round. So that meant that it was anyone's game and it all would come down to the third round. During the third round, it was Stewart and Roczen for first place. They were back and forth the entire round, but in the end...Stewart won.
After the race we went back to our hotel and went to bed, but we got up the next day to explore the Strip. We had some breakfast and gambled in the Circus Circus. We met an awesome card dealer who taught me how to play Blackjack and helped me win some cash! Brett wanted to go and see Margaritaville and I wanted to go see the Gardens at the Bellagio. So we went to the Gardens first and then walked up The Strip to see some of the different hotels. The bartenders at Margaritaville were so funny and entertaining; throwing bottles around, blowing whistles, and telling jokes.
It was definitely the funnest weekend that I have ever had in Las Vegas!
